Applicant X approached the DLSA office following domestic violence and divorce proceedings initiated by her husband. Referred by DCW and registered through the front office of North West, she arrived at the counseling room visibly nervous and anxious. The counselor began by establishing rapport, creating a safe and supportive environment to normalize her emotional and mental state.
During the session, Applicant X opened up about her marital issues. She mentioned her support system included her family and sister-in-law, emphasizing their role during difficult times.
Identifying resilience in Applicant X, the counselor noted her positive self-view and problem-solving capabilities despite challenges. The proposed strategy involved both individual and couple counseling sessions.
Undeterred, the counselor persisted, sending further legal notices and encouraging self-motivation strategies. During a follow-up visit, Applicant X reported residing with her husband at her in-laws’ house. Eventually, both parties attended counseling individually, followed by joint sessions focusing on marital discord and the husband’s alcohol abuse and resulting verbal abuse, leading to frequent arguments.
During counseling, the counselor addressed the husband’s alcohol addiction, motivating him to seek help via a national toll-free number. The husband reached out for guidance, and ongoing support was provided through follow-up calls. Both parties reported improvements in their relationship, expressing happiness and reconciliation.
